Day 221-"Meet Cute"

In The Holiday, Iris (Kate Winslet) meets a renowned screenwriter named Arthur (Wallach) who calls their meeting a "meet cute".  "Meet cute" means that a boy and a girl meet in some cute way.  Arthur who is like a parent to Iris helps her mend a broken heart and encourages her to become her own person; both inspire each other with courage and compassion.  40 years ago, Rick and I had a "meet cute" and little did we know it would set the stage for our whole lives.

Rick and I met at Northgate High School on April 9, 1975 when I began school the last quarter of my freshman year after moving to Walnut Creek.  Rick was a sophomore and would turn 16 in August.  I had typing and he had accounting with Mr. Bartz.  He would leave me typed notes in my typewriter as he passed by on his way to his class. Those notes, though fragile and yellowed, still exist. Ironically, typewriters do not, except for antiques.  (Actor Tom Hanks, I have heard, collects old typewriters.)

I am so glad our paths crossed then and later on in college. Rick, then and now, inspires me to try to be better every day. He is dedicated, committed, steadfast and devoted to the gospel, his family, work, and service. As much as he wants to believe he is a boring tax accountant, he is fun and funny.  Thanks Rick for making our "meet cute" last forever as we manage the bumps in the road sharing the front seat together!
