I press the tube
and the blue
toothpaste
takes up a tiny space
on my grandson's
toothbrush.
"It burns" he says
"so not too much."
I let the water pour
over the toothbrush.
I ask him nicely
to open his mouth;
he does so
unwillingly.
I try to brush
the front teeth
then the back
before he spits
the toothpaste out.
I hand him
the toothbrush
to have him try
and he runs away
with it.
"Come back to rinse
 your mouth and
have a drink of water."
"Water"  he cries.
"I need water!"
"Look at those clean teeth."
He shows me his
white baby teeth grin.
Then in a flash,
he hops off the step stool
and runs away again.
